Cet article étudie les liens étroits entre l'historien anglais Eric Hobsbawm et les historiens professionnels en France, de sa participation au Congrès international des sciences historiques de 1950 à ses rapports avec Fernand Braudel et quelques autres. Il démontre l'importance du réseau informel de contacts et d'influences qui se forma tant autour des deux hommes qu'entre les nouvelles institutions, notamment la VI e section de l'École pratique des hautes études et la revue Past and Present , qu'ils aidèrent à fonder et auxquelles ils étaient associés. Ce réseau servit de catalyseur à la profession d'historien des deux côtés de l'Atlantique et transforma la façon dont les sciences historiques étaient organisées. Réunis au départ par leur intérêt partagé et jamais démenti pour l'histoire économique et l'histoire du capitalisme, ses membres furent au cœur de la promotion de l'histoire sociale, qui devint un sujet dominant des champs historiques prémoderne et moderne à partir des années 1970. Ces bouleversements intellectuels découlaient de la valeur accordée à l'histoire, considérée désormais comme une science sociale en tant que telle.
